Some examples of games we might play at one of our workshops
Or you might want to try out with a group of your own friends …
Milling around do-see-do game
Form a circle
Everyone to stand, mill around for a while, meandering, passing people, looking at people. And when you feel like it, you shake hands with someone, and when you next feel like, you, using your other hand, of course to shake hands with the next person you meet, reach for the next person’s hand, but you can’t let go of the person you used to be shaking with until you and the new person are shaking hands, so for a very brief moment there are bunches of people in squiggly lines holding hands.
Everyone hold hands in a circle while one person is chosen as the bear and goes to sleep in the middle. The people step around singing the following whilst walking towards the bear:
Grizzly bear, grizzly bear sleeping in your cave. (Whisper & tip toe)
Grizzly bear, oh grizzly bear sleeping in your cave. Please be very quiet; please be very quiet
At ‘If you shake him/her’ If you wake him/her
The brave ones can gently tap the bear on the back.
He/she gets very mad! (Bears wake up and growl
At the end of the song, the bear wakes up and chases the children who run to the edges of the room and touch the wall for ‘safety’.
The child who is caught becomes the new bear.
Everybody’s IT Freeze Tag
To start the game, decide on where the boundaries are
Everyone spread out so there’s enough running room inside of the boundaries to run around
Someone shouts “Go!”
And, since everybody’s IT, everybody runs after everybody else, tagging anybody they can.
Play as many times as you like, each game is quite short
Stuck in the mud
Decide where boundaries are.
Two people are it
They have to chase everyone else. If a person gets tagged they must stand still waving there arm around. Anyone who is not tagged can release them by crawling between their legs.
Continues until everyone is stuck
The magic forest
Assign people to each of these roles.
FAIRY QUEEN – Say “Your Majesty”, stand up and bow
BROWN OWL – “Hoot Hoot”
MOSS – “Fairy Carpet”
WATER – “Ripple Ripple”
ANIMALS – Choose and animal and make a sound
BERRIES – “Yum Yum”
BIRDS – “Tweet Tweet”
TOADSTOOLS – “Fairy Magic”
LAUGH – “Ho Ho”
LEAVES – “Rustle Rustle”
EVERGREENS – “Creak Creak”
Then tell the story, as each of the above “roles” are mentioned, the person assigned must complete their action.
Once there was a little girl who lived in the MAGIC FOREST under a large TOADSTOOL and slept on some lovely green MOSS. She liked to lie on the MOSS and listen to the LEAVES, EVERGREENS and ANIMALS. She ate BERRIES and drank WATER from the brook. This little girl whose name is Happy, loved to LAUGH. She would LAUGH at the other children, the BIRDS, the ANIMALS, the EVERGREENS, the MOSS, the BERRIES, the TOADSTOOLS, and even the LEAVES, for she was so jolly. However, Happy would LAUGH even if someone were in trouble. If a little boy fell from an EVERGREEN, got caught on a BERRY bush, tangled in the LEAVES, fell from a TOADSTOOL on to the MOSS with a bump, or even into the WATER, still Happy would LAUGH.
Finally, the other children went to BROWN OWL who was hidden in the LEAVES of the largest EVERGREEN of all down by the WATER. “BROWN OWL”, complained the children, “Happy LAUGHS at all of us children, the ANIMALS, and just everything, all the time.” “I thought it was good to LAUGH”, said BROWN OWL. “Not all the time” said the children, and the BIRDS, and the ANIMALS and the EVERGREENS, LEAVES and BERRY bushes all agreed. “Well”, said BROWN OWL, “Let’s ask the FAIRY QUEEN. So the FAIRY QUEEN came to the meeting in the clearing in the EVERGREENS close to the BERRY bushes, in the shade of the LEAVES down by the water, on a very large TOADSTOOL, surrounded by lovely green MOSS. BROWN OWL, children, BIRDS and ANIMALS told FAIRY QUEEN about the problem of Happy who always LAUGHED. “Sometimes it is not helpful to LAUGH”, said the FAIRY QUEEN. So by special magic, FAIRY QUEEN sent a message by the LEAVES, through the MAGIC FOREST for Happy to come to her. Happy, heard the message of the LEAVES and came running. As she neared the TOADSTOOL, the EVERGREENS reached out a root and tripped her gently – just enough to send the little girl tumbling into the WATER. FAIRY QUEEN, BROWN OWL, BROWNIES, BIRDS, ANIMALS, LEAVES, MOSS, EVERGREENS, TOADSTOOL, BERRY bushes, and even the WATER LAUGHED as hard as they could at the poor, wet Happy. Happy’s feelings were hurt badly when they all LAUGHED. She could not understand. So FAIRY QUEEN and BROWN OWL took her up on the TOADSTOOL and kindly explained it to her.
Forever after, Happy never LAUGHED at anyone in trouble. She thanked the FAIRY QUEEN, BROWN OWL, the BIRDS, ANIMALS, LEAVES, MOSS, EVERGREENS, TOADSTOOL, and even the WATER for showing her how to be helpful in the MAGIC FOREST.
o play, the groups must communicate and figure out how to untangle the knot (forming a circle of people) without ever letting go of any hands. If you wish, this icebreaker can be played competitively, in which the facilitator says “Ready.. Set.. Go!” and has all the groups race to become the first group to finish. If any group member lets go of a hand (breaks the chain), then the group must start from the beginning, or you could impose a penalty/punishment for that person (e.g. wear a blindfold).
This game typically takes 15-30 minutes to complete. You can impose a time limit if you wish to make the game more challenging. When you are done with the Human Knot activity, you can ask some debrief questions if you wish, such as “How well did you group work together? What strategies did your group adopt? How did it feel to solve the game?” etc
This game is best played in a large group. Everyone sits down and puts their heads down, eyes close. Tap one person on the head, this person is the assassin and has to eliminate the others by winking at them. If you are winked at, silently count to 10, then safely fall down. If you think you know who the assassin is, before you get eliminated, you can say you have a suspect. If you are wrong, you are out. If not, you win and the game begins again.
The lap game
Players stand in a circle. Put their right (or left) hands towards the center of the circle. Then place their hands on the waist of the person in front of them. Get close enough so that their arms are at their sides, their elbows bent at right angles.
When comfortable, then slowly bend their knees while moving the person in front of them so that that person eventually winds up sitting on their knees, while at the same time allowing the person behind them to help them sit on that person’s knees.
